Josephine Clarke grew up in the South West of Western Australia. After an Arts Degree and a Dip. Ed. at UWA she taught High School English before travelling to other states and countries with her family. Josephine now lives in Fremantle and is a member of the Voicebox collective and Out of the Asylum Writers’ Group. She has had poetry and short stories published in several Australian journals. In 2015 Josephine attended a Strictly Poetry Focus Week at Varuna, the National Writers’ House, with Deb Westbury.
“Each poem in this collection can be savoured slowly many times over, every phase of its musical fragrance something to be relished, like the risotto from the poet’s family kitchen. This promise of ongoing reading pleasure resides in Clarke’s capacity to exactly balance sensual richness with a spare, tensile grace, so the work never cloys. Her precise and loving evocation of place conjures the sights, sounds and tastes of more than one culture. You are invited to the feast.” Liana Joy Christensen
“These 20 or so poems encompass huge emotional territory, as well as geographical space, and always with a nod to the net of time in which we are enwrapped. Language is pared back, exquisitely chiselled, to release essences, the hidden beauties and sadnesses and joys that are there in all our lives if only we could apprehend them. Josephine Clarke helps us to do exactly that: to see and feel that the world, for all its sorrows, can still spark in us joy, even a sense of transcendence.” Shane McCauley
